When I am saying that the Kentucky Derby was exciting, admittedly I did not go. I have always wanted to go down to Louisville and Churchill Downs for it, but have never gotten the opportunity. However, I definitely watched it on TV, and it's easy todigest why it is called the best 2 minutes in sports.
What I like most about the Kentucky Derby is usually the variety of fun horse names. This year, some of my favorites included Midnight Bourbon (how could a horse like that *not* win the Kentucky Derby), O Bezos, Rock Your World, Highly Motivated, and Hot Rod Charlie. It is refreshing to see a sport where the owners entirely have fun with this aspect, although for most teams it is a very serious business.
For the race, I was rooting for Midnight Bourbon, O Bezos, Super Stock, and the betting favorite Essential Quality to come out on top. Early in the race, none of these horses were anywhere near the lead, but all but Super Stock made strong pushes in the 2nd half of the race. Of these horses, only Essential Quality made a run for the leaders. At the end of the race though, he came up just short of the front pack and ended up coming in 4th place. The winner was Medina Spirit, who has an amazing backstory as it was sold for just $1,000 in 2019 and now is the winner of the $1.8M Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit is also owned by Bob Baffert, who is a legend in his own right and holds the record for Derby wins by a single owner, now with 7 after this year.
